The Fabulous Greek Key!
In preparing my bid for the DC Design House Showhouse, which will open in early April in DC, I was reminded of one of my favorite design patterns…The Greek Key! The sink in the powder room of the house has a greek key design in it and it was the inspiration behind the design concept I developed and presented for that space last week. Here is a shot of the bathroom sink before any work has been done to it.
{Isn’t this sink absolutely stunning! My design included keeping it and using it as inspiration for the design of the space.}
Since my early days when I first was exposed to the glorious world of interior design, I have always gravitated toward anything with a Greek Key–rugs, bedding, bordered drapes, towels, furniture, fixtures and anything else that incorporates this classic pattern. For all its glamour, it is such a simple pattern that adds a bit of sophistication and a little punch of visual interest to most any decor. The Greek Key is to design what salt is to your pantry–a staple that is so versatile that it can be used in many different settings. I love it’s eye-catching geometric quality and the classic, sophisticated feel it evokes.
Just recently I specified an ottoman for one of our clients (a starting pitcher for a major league baseball team) and came across this round ottoman from Barry Dixon’s line. I worked on finding the perfect fabric and selected the nail heads, and voila…the results were amazing!

{I just love this ottoman from Barry Dixon who even has a Greek Key built into his logo. I suspect that he is as big a fan as I am of this wonderful pattern. The fabric is from Donghia, but the style is all Barry. Isn’t the Greek Key amazing?}
Given my love for this classic motif, I decided to do some research this week to find a few Greek Key inspired interiors and furnishings that I can share with you. I’ve included below a few pictures of some of my favorites!
{This room designed by Amanda Nisbet was found on one of my favorite design blogs, La Dolce Vida. Again, I love the black and white, but check out the Greek Key drapes in the back. I even like they way they puddle. My fellow blogger, Paloma Contreras of La Dolce Vida uses a Greek Key pattern as a border on her blog. Could it be that she loves this wonderful motif as much as me?}

{This beautiful kids’ bedding ensemble is available on Cuddles Kids Bedding Boutique. Don’t you just love the vibrant colors? }
{Isn’t this Greek Key pattern rug amazing? Amanda Nisbet really outdid herself with this design. The rug adds the visual interest this room needs to ‘come to life.’ }
{Check out this wallpaper available from Jonathan Adler. It comes in three colors and is so beautiful when installed. The lightest version is the perfect back drop for a subtle Greek Key effect!}
{In this room designed by famed The Brooklyn Home Company, you can see the Adler wallpaper in action. It is so subtle, but oh so stunning just the same!}
{Check out how this motif plays out in furniture. This table was showcased on VTinteriors. Don’t you just love it? This table can work in so many different design styles that it is surely something a Greek Key lover like me should probably look into purchasing.}
{ Check out this amazing bedroom by Mary McDonald, as showcased on La Dolce Vida. I love the deep, rich blues used in this room with the crisp white linens, but that Greek Key is screaming at me in an elegant and classy way. Check out the pillows and border on the bedding — its all Greek!!!}
{I love the bold colors and lines of this cabinet. This type of cabinet is available on Vintage and Modern. It is just so darn pretty!}
{Love this pillow from Etsy.com.}
{Another great find available on Etsy.com.}
{Love this crisp white bedding with just a hint of my favorite pattern. This bedding is available on Etsy.com.}

{This room by Delphine Krakoff, as seen on DecorPad, demonstrates the versatility of the Greek Key. It is used here in a little boy’s room and yet it isn’t stuffy or overdone. It adds just the right amount of ‘umf’ to make the blue in the room really pop!}
